PROPER CARE AND REPAIR OF VINTAGE INTIMATES

Blog Post by Denise St. James

If your closet or bureau drawer has a vintage bra or garter belt that you love and hasn't been worn in years because of a broken or stretched out strap, or a hose support that doesn't 'support' any more, you're not alone.  Many of us have favorite items that we just can't seem to discard, but when it's a vintage item that's not easily replaceable, we tend to hang on to those the longest.

There are ways to repair all cotton bras and garters with vintage out-of-stock repair kits found on line.  These include replacement shoulder straps in 1/2" size or larger widths, cushion straps, original bra back extenders in two and three hooks, new 'sew-on' hose supporters and more.  Another great item is the nylon Shoulder Strap Guard which you pin to the shoulder seam of your dress near the neck (pin included), you then snap the ends around the shoulder straps of your bras to prevent slippage of your straps under a sleeveless dress.  No more tugging at the straps to stay in place.

These repair items and more can be found in the bra, garter and hosiery repair category brassiere_garter_repair

Once you have repaired these wonderful vintage intimates you want to either hand wash them or use a lingerie bag in the washer on gentle cycle.  This will ensure that your intimates will last for years to come.

Vintage Stockings and Nylons are a Must

If you're going for the authentic vintage feel of an outfit, why not invest in new old stock vintage stockings and nylons.  You can find sizes from small to queen from Christian Dior, Maidette, Shiaparelli, Big Mama, Underalls, JC Penney, Burdines, Footies, Hanes and more.

Vintage Sewing Patterns

Once you've refurbished your intimate bras and garter belts, you may want to add to your collection by sewing your own slips, petticoats, Hollywood inspired lingerie, bed jackets and more.  If you love the look of 1950's Sophia Loren inspired blouses, the 1960's Mad Men inspired wardrobes, or the 1970's Bohemian inspired Boho look, you have come to the right 'warehouse'.  Browse the 'aisles' and take a trip back in time.

Spooktacular Halloween Stitching

Below are some spooktacular Halloween stitchery by our very own guest blogger Carriemae D. from Florida!  She has provided us with some of her most recent Halloween cross stitch creations which include a reversible 'finish' seasonal Halloween picture, a ghostly crocheted doily and beaded Halloween ornaments for her seasonal tree!!

"This is finished as one piece with reversible sides.  First time I tried this finish technique as I'm always struggling for ways to finish projects other than framing.  I have several picture stands of various sizes.  I believe I will finish more projects like this so I can display them seasonally."

"Crocheted Ghost Doily I fell in love with"

"The little diamonds are from a kit, I don't remember which company.  I stitched them all in beads instead of just floss.  Didn't like the plain backs so I added the Halloween buttons for interest.  I hang them on my Halloween tree."

I am so impressed with Carriemae's use of beads in almost all her work!  It adds depth and dimension to an otherwise 'plain' cross stitch project!  If you have any projects you would like to share, especially those with added dimension, please write me an email and we can add you to our guest blogs.

New Feature

Hello Stitchers and Crafters,

I have a new feature on my website called "The Fitting Room"This page will profile customers that want to share photos of their creations and introduce themselves to our visitors - anything from crafts, clothing, dolls, quilts, retro fashion and more.  If you want to "brag" a little or just "share", please send me an email telling me a little about yourself and add 4 or 5 photos of your work.  Maybe a 5 step process to making a quilt or doll, or 4 or 5 photos of your best vintage fashions.

Take a look at our first profile Lise L. from Santa Barbara for some ideas of what you can send.  I will do a similar page for each profile that is received!

Once you submit a photo, I will only use it on "The Fitting Room" page and no where else, your submission is permission to use the photos on that page.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email me prior to submission.

I hope to receive many profiles of the wonderful work that is out there and share your stories with my visitors.

Warm Regards and Have a Wonderful Weekend!

Denise

"Our bustling downtown is a thing of the past and as door after door closes forever on fabric stores, art stores, and book stores, I find myself turning to the online presence of some of those businesses for essential supplies.  Endlessly scrolling and filling up my cyber cart and click click clicking to get through all of the windows is a chore and hardly inspirational.  Frustrated, I was about to close my computer and surrender my life long artist reality when one simple heading caught my eye:  "Vintage Pattern Warehouse".  Desperate, I decide to try one more search and what a difference that last click makes!  This wonderful, colorful site and business is owned by Denise St. James and it is a delight and joy to navigate.  I chose three patterns very carefully (and conservatively considering how many I wanted to choose), placed my order, and waited excitedly.  When my package arrived everything was beautifully chosen, protected, and perfect.  I am beyond happy with the timely service, great prices, and personal kindness extended by the very much bonafied Denise.  She is the best of the business world all stitched up with passion, enthusiasm, and joy.  She delivers the goods and has helped me jump start my sewing career once again.  My photos show the tremendous care and personal touches that made my order so special.  Thank you Denise!"  Lise L., Santa Barbara, CA

Lise has worked in costuming for over 20 years as a designer for the Costume Departments of UC Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara CC, Opera Santa Barbara and the Music Academy!  Some of her work will be displayed in a new PAGE we are starting which features sewing creations made by you, my wonderful visitors!  If you have any fashions or crafts you have made from something you have purchased from my website and would like to 'show it off', please feel free to contact me with a photo or two and I will share it with others.  Don't be shy, others can and will be inspired by what you have sewn.  What better way to share your talents!

Warm Regards and Happy Sewing,
Denise
